Image hosted by Photobucket.com Ayt ya all, thiz iz the shiznit on da Game

lets muck around with some game theory now. lets try to address a problem troubling niggers and beotches the world around: to play or not to play

seen in a certain way romance really is a game, one about math really. playin is essentially what is termed a prisoner's dilemma

Figure 1

figure 1 is called a pay-off matrix. the numbers try to quantify how much benefit the person gets out of the interaction. a 2 would mean a "win" situation, a 1 is "could be better" and a 0 means "loser"

non-playahs by definition look for commitment and offer commitment. therefore if X chooses not to be a playah the best outcome for him would be if he met Y and Y was also a non-playah. this is the lower-right box in the matrix. thus it would be a "win-win" situation. they are in the hizzie

playaz on the other hand would not be better off if they met a fellow playah. nobody likes to be played, even playaz. so if X chose to be a playah and she encountered Y who also happened to be a playah, they might have fun but eventually leave each other unsatisfied because of mutual playin, as can be seen in the upper left box. there fore the situation for both is "could be better"

if a playah meets a non-playah, the playah is the big winner hands down, and the non-playah is the sucker. you can see this in the upper-right and lower-left boxes where the playah "wins" and the non-playah gets whippt fo' shizzle

so if this is the human condition with respect to how people get some, whats a nizzle to do? according to the nash equilibrium (john nash, the beautiful mind dude), people will go with the alternative where, on average they get the most benefit. looking at our matrix, being a playah you have an expected value of 1.5 for each game, while non-playaz get only an average of 1. therefore the equilibrium point would be the upper-left box where both try to play each other. its an equilibrium because if either one changes strategy they become losers, so they would tend to stick to being playaz.

and so if the world really is about being selfish and looking out for your own good, everyone would probably be playaz because, it seems, that is the shiznit

is there a better solution? well actually game theory offers us other options. one strategy involves being nice while the other involves dice, but i'll be elabiratizzilating da mo' fizzy sumthingz later

meanwhile, go gizoogle sumthin

sweet verse

never read hamlet and i dont plan to but this part is good:

Yet here, Laertes! Aboard, aboard for shame!
The wind sits in the shoulder of your sail,
And you are stay'd for.
There ... my blessing with thee!
And these few precepts in thy memory
Look thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue,
Nor any unproportion'd thought his act.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
Of each new-hatch'd, unfledg’d comrade. Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel but, being in,
Bear't that th' opposed may beware of thee.
Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice;
Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgement.
Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man;
And they in France of the best rank and station
Are of a most select and generous chief in that.
Neither a borrower, nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell; my blessing season this in thee!

never read yeats either but this one is cute:

the second coming

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

and of course there are native masters:

sa silong ni kaka may taong nakadapa
kaya pala nakadapa naninilip ng palaka
palakang may buhok ngipin ay nakalubog
kulay niya ay itim hindi naman sunog

early one morning in the middle of the night
two dead boys got up to fight
back to back they faced each other
drew their knives and stabbed each other
a deaf policeman heard the noise
and went and killed the two dead boys
-anonymous

there are some amazing people who actually contradict themselves in the things they say, often without knowing it. such people will probably not win many debates. they will insist that the world is round and it is also flat at the same time. using some arcane system of logic, that might actually be true, but that doesn't make it any easier to swallow. hypotheses are tested by taking sides, not by taking all sides. the only thing certain at that point would be confusion. therefore, let us make changes so things stay the same forever, for the time being (sic)

Metr0n0mic0n: Chronicles of the last human city , a photo essay

kafka, camus, orwell. their novels are not easy to love. so it is also true with the great beast called City, both mother and whore. no images of smiling children or joyous vistas to be had; the intention here is to depress, and in so doing inspire a frantic search for hope. the healer is dead. go cure yourselves.

from a bbc documentary, from bits and pieces that i know of physics, from science fiction novels, and some loose ends from philosophy:

one of the implications of the general theory of relativity is that time and space are just two sides of the same coin (not sure if the analogy is correct). this means that you can treat them as two very similar things. the way space stretches is a bit like how time stretches as well.

Figure A

in figure A, objects in space all exist together at a certain point in time. you, standing on the street exist at the same time as the house exists and the tree exists and the earth exists and the galaxy exists. you might be in different places but you all exist together. you can move towards the tree or towards the house or suddenly teleport to another planet but still all the other things will still be there in space. if the general theory of relativity is correct, the same should apply to time.

Figure B

if time has the same property as space, that means all past instances and all future instances exist together. the person you were yesterday exists as real as the person you will be tomorrow as real as the person you are this very moment. you can therefore think of the future as a place you are headed for, like you are headed for a tree; just because you havent gotten there yet it doesnt mean that it doesnt exist yet, meaning (if i understood the bbc docu right) the future already exists! and by corollary, the past STILL exists, just as the tree still exists even if you move away from it in space.

this has many interesting implications:

a) time travel and clairvoyance are both possible in a universe that follows the general relativity model

and

b) the universe is deterministic; the future is already OUT THERE. meaning you can't really change it, its already been set since time and space evolved from chaos

if somehow that depresses you, there is some relief offered by the OTHER big theory in physics, quantum theory. in the quantum universe, when you get to the very very small small tiny tiny particles of things, it seems that things are so very NOT deterministic. they actually random, chaotic. there is no predicting where this piece will be in the next millionth of a second. it could suddenly be somewhere else. everything suddenly becomes probabilistic instead of being set in stone. the happy thing about that is that there might be some way quantum randomness affects human beings so that in the end our choices are entirely free, random, nothing pre-determined

the strange thing is that physicists seem to find that BOTH theories are true, so far. how can that be? i dont know, but scientists and philosophers are trying to reconcile the two together. could it be that they could find a way to marry the idea of FATE and FREE WILL? too bad none of my friends chose to be scientists or philosophers. things like these are great with beer and peanuts

now here's something for april fools that i wish i had the guts to do. because its so funny. maybe one of you can do it and tell me about it after.

Mukha siyang malinis at amoy mumurahing pabango.

okay so maybe some of you didn't think it was so funny. blasphemy is a tricky thing. if i die within the week that means He/She doesn't have a sense of humor (at least my life won't be a waste if i prove there really is a God) if i'm still alive that probably means He/She is going to do something Much worse

hahaha! eto na ang pinaka skwater kong kanta! lumabas nalang bigla sa ulo ko parang hatsing. (save target as dito)

labsong

eto ang plano
ganito, ganito
sisikat tayo
hit na hit,
parang anghit
kailangan lang magpagupit
at maalalang mag-ahit
wag mag drugs, wag iinom
magensayo, alagaan ang instrumento
mag cologne, mag polo
dahil alam ko na ang sekreto
panalo ang manok na to
kung gusto mong sumikat
labsong ang gawin mo

iisa lang ang hanap ng pilipino
yung may tampuhan sa umpisa
pero lampungan sa dulo
pakipot na romansa
malanding mga nota
pwedeng maangas, malupit
basta may chorus na swit
parang anghit

Image hosted by Photobucket.com WARNING: L & A

the following is an excerpt of things that go through my mind when i ride a bus and i am trying to ignore "daisy siete" on the on-board t.v.

i dont know who came up with the word, but "post-everything" is a good way to describe the intellectual world today; its even a good way of describing blogging. in a post-everything world, one of the watchwords is exploitation. meaning its to be avoided. but i have two problems about it on my mind:

1. is profiting from human suffering always exploitation?
this seems to be a no-brainer but take this example: I like taking pictures. we all know the really great pictures are the pictures that tell a human story. especially moving pictures happen to be about the bleakness of the human condition. since i dont really earn anything from photography and i dont get my pictures published anywhere except the net, i am an amateur; i take pictures for the personal enjoyment of it. so, if i take a picture of an especially pathetic looking quadraplegic leprosy ridden beggar, i am really doing it because i think it would make a good picture, not because i am serving some higher cause (except, maybe, art), or because i earn a living out of it. so i am profiting from the beggar's pitiful condition. is it exploitation? obviously i could give him some money for his trouble, but not much since photography drains the funds enough as it is. is a token amount enough to compensate the exploitation that i think happened? is the offense mitigated if i ask for the person's consent? i could give him a copy of the picture but that doesnt help his condition any and i still get more from my end of the bargain (e.g. improve my portfolio, aesthetic pleasure, admiration from people, etc). is it ok to shoot scenes of social reality or should i stick to party pictures and inanimate objects?

2. is pornography always exploitation?
there is no denying that porno is enjoyable to me and many other people. i dont really buy into the belief that watching porno makes rapists; might as well say that watching the ten commandments will make you want to become a priest. there is however the question of exploitation. it is generally agreed by me and my friends that a beautiful woman will strip and fuck for the camera if and only if she meets the following requirements:

either she:
a) has no other skills, has a low IQ score, for some reason cannot or does not want to get married, and is desperately in need of money

or she:
b) is suffering from any of various mental disturbances (schizophrenia, personality disorders, nymphomania, alien mind control, etc.)

or a dreadful combination of both

if that is the case, if you are the sort of person who despises exploitation but doesnt have anything against jerking off (a consciencious type of pervert) would watching hentai be the safe thing to do? or is the enjoyment derived from cartoon bimbos a vicarious kind of exploitation?

truth is a missing page
truth is the last breath of a murdered journalist

Another Case of Strangulation
music by sonic
words by mute

They buried truth today in an unmarked grave
No one came
No flowers laid

In the fields and towns they are singing songs
To army drums
And cracking guns

Chorus:
This here's another killer front page
There'll be another wake come Sunday
Another fire gone cold
Another freedom sold

They are reading lines of official type
All was fine
A matter of time

All across the land they are wringing hands
No one stands
No honest men

Chorus 2x
They buried truth today in an unmarked grave

it would be deeply appreciated if people refrain from presuming that they know what i think and feel without asking me first. contrary to what some might believe, i have never deliberately avoided people who want to talk to me. premature assumptions and non-existent communication sow confusion. that being said, it seems i am also presuming to know what you think and feel about what i think and feel. therefore it would be wrong of you to expect me to make sense. got that?

Out of admiration for George Orwell (having just read Hitchens' "Why Orwell Matters") i would like to review my prejudices, because knowing them is extremely useful:

1. It seems i have a prejudice against popular culture. e.g.: i tend to categorize "my music" from "mainstream"; i am suspicious about television and what most people think is "entertainment"; i keep telling myself "why would i feel the need to read dan brown when i have yet to read dostoevsky?". i find this troubling because its seeping into my politics. to say it plainly: i distrust the masses. this train of thought is dangerous because it could eventually lead to fascism. ware the iron boot

2. I also have a prejudice against people who i find are unabashedly self-confident, who make bold assertions, who, in general, seem to know more than i do. i tend to assume that such people do not know self-doubt and therefore will make stupid mistakes. i should know better than to judge people by my own weaknesses

3. I have a slight prejudice against smoking, though it hasnt stopped me from having lots of friends with the habit. i am always tempted to wonder about smokers whether they do it for self-esteem, relaxation or as a social crutch. really, is it possible that they dont mind having cancer a few years from now?

4. I still have a lingering homophobia, but being around male faculty who have "defected" clears the air a lot. not that ill be a new recruit in the near future (defensive)

whether you are lenin or pol pot you have used the poor for something. to justify an intellectual cause or to implement genocide or to ease your guilt by giving alms you have used the poor for something. because it is easy to use the poor. and no one trusts them to have their own opinions. so people feel free to tell them what to do while dangling hope in front of their eyes. they are treated like children, who will do tricks for sweets. the question is, as they are right now, can the masses be trusted to rule themselves (and by implication, rule all of us)?

On Lying

I've just finished reading the first chapter of "Contemporary Moral Issues" editted by James White (this was what got me going on my earlier post). At the end of the chapter there are questions that the reader can try to address. The first was "Is lying always wrong? When is it not wrong and why?" And so I'll drag out an answer here.

It is not sufficient to say that lying is witholding or distorting the truth. Can anyone be REALLY sure that what he knows is true or not? If what you know is false in the first place, distorting it probably isn't that bad. Far better, in my opinion, to say that lying is mainly an intentional betrayal of trust through deception. Because people trust us to say things that we know are true, telling a lie would be betraying this expectation. This is a broad definition; it can include things like breaking a promise. If a certain person promised not to seek re-election and then decided to run anyway, that is also a betrayal of trust, and so this would be a close cousin to lying.

What makes lying so bad is that when you think about it society is an engine running on trust. We trust doctors not to decieve us when talking about drugs and side-effects; we trust drivers to turn left when they signal LEFT; I trusted the authors of the articles I read that what they were feeding me wasn't just fancy harvard bullshit. It just wouldn't work without trust. Anything that undermines trust undermines society and that is bad. Therefore, lying is bad.

But we know for a fact that sometimes lying isn't really bad. If the bad guys asked you where the good guy was hiding and you in fact know where the good guy is, you are not obligated, and actually shouldn't tell the truth. In cases like this, the situation is such that there is no existing relationship of trust or trust has already been compromised. Lying to an enemy spy is not bad because neither side expects the other to tell the truth and so no trust is betrayed. People who have already taken advantage of people's trust (bad guys) cannot hold other people to fulfill their trust in them (the other people). You can therefore choose to tell the truth or lie to bad guys depending on the situation. If there is greater benefit in lying (the good guy will be safe) then lying in this situation is justified.

Summing it up, lying is an intentional betrayal of trust through deception. Lying is bad because betraying trust makes social living impossible. In a situation where there are no relationships based on trust or trust has already been betrayed, lying is not in itself bad.

So, did I answer it well enough? Are there things I missed? Are there exceptions to the rules I scratched out? If so speak up

being the kind of person i am i do not like to engage in debates about religion. the idea of talking about who is more correct when it comes to whether there is a hell or not, whether God is just one man or woman, two men and a dove, or a thousand souls, doesn't really do it for me. for one thing, i find belief to be so personal and subjective that arguments about it never really reach common ground. there are no standards to go by, like two people arguing whether the dish was delicious or not. no matter how conclusive the argument is, it will never change the fact that one person found the dish tasty while the other did not. and so, in principle i avoid debates about food and religion.

one of the things i do like to argue about is ethics. now this for me is worth brawling about. like the question "is it selfish to see to your own well being?", "is seeking my own happiness a hedonistic thing to do?". given the field that i am in, i firmly believe that the single most important thing for people in general is the self. there is nothing intrinsically bad in acting for yourself and seeking pleasure for yourself. and yet even in saying that people usually do self-serving things, it is not to say that we are not capable of doing unselfish things either. there are always people who will throw away their lives for someone else, from soldiers to mothers. the thing is, you should not think that acting for yourself and acting for others are two mutually exclusive things. doing one could lead to the other. you can act in your self interest and at the same time cause the well being of others; conversely you could also act for the well being of others and achieve happiness for yourself in the process. for hedonism, happiness is the greatest good, but it did not say that you have to be selfish about it or that seeking your own happiness will eventually lead to unhappiness in others. happiness is not a zero-sum game; it is possible for everyone to win. by looking for your own happiness, it enables you to help others achieve happiness in the future. and it is very possible that the simple fact that you are happy will make others happy also.

all of this isnt really original so if you dont trust me you can probably trust the ethical philosphers who have mowed this lawn before and keep mowing it still (but they wont all agree with whats written here). this argument has long been on my mind; i just needed more reading to articulate it. i of course have my own reasons for rehashing it here.

RHCP - My Friends
My friends are so depressed
I feel the question
Of your loneliness
Confide... 'cause I'll be on your side
You know I will, you know I will

X Girlfriend called me up
Alone and desperate
On the prison phone
They want... to give her 7 years
For being sad

Chorus :
I love all of you
Hurt by the cold
So hard and lonely too
When you don't know yourself

My friends are so distressed
And standing on
The brink of emptiness
No words... I know of to express
This emptiness

Chorus :
Imagine me taught by tragedy
Release is peace
I heard a little girl
And what she said
Was something beautiful
To give... your love
No matter what

teaching is probably the closest ill get to being in mass media. if im lucky, there will actually be 4-5 people out of 40 who will actually listen. thats enough to start a terrorist cell. gnarly.
